Q&A With 3-D: What Tickets Do Our Crews Have?

We’ve decided to take some time and begin to answer a lot of recent and frequent questions clients and homeowners ask us, in hopes that more and more in the industry will hear about 3-D, and understand the value, experience and efficiency we provide. Each week we’ll pick a question…answer it and discuss a bit about it!

“What safety tickets do your crews hold?”

Each LOCATE TECHNICIAN / ASSISTANT maintains the following certifications when working at 3-D:

3-D Line Locating Ltd. Minimum Requirements:

  • H2S Alive
  • Standard First Aid
  • WHMIS
  • TDG
  • PCST (Pipeline Construction Safety Training)

3-D Line Locating Ltd. In-House Training for the following:

  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Heat Stress/Extreme Temperatures
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Hazard Recognition and Control
  • 3-D Safety Training Orientation
  • Client- Specific Orientations
  • 3-D Line Locating Ltd. – Quality & Procedural Manual

As there is no current trade designation process, 3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd recognizes and utilizes the above courses as providing adequate training for basic locating skills. This formal training in conjunction with in-house training, audits and using a mentoring process ensures our personnel are trained to the highest standards in the industry.

3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd.’s Locators must exhibit knowledge, understanding, and competence of several key elements pertaining to the locating industry. These competencies are recognized by many locating contractors as standard. Higher levels of each competency improve as experience grows.

3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd. recognizes an individual as a competent locator who is able to work unsupervised and maintain a standard of quality that is consistent with 3-D policy. Individuals must work alongside a senior 3-D locator for mentoring and observation. Once an individual has satisfied 3-D’s demands as a competent locator they are then allowed to work as a junior crew chief under the supervision of senior staff. For each new locator, the time required under observation varies depending on previous training and proven abilities.

 

3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd. Grading System

3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd. has further broken the areas of competency down and created a grading system from 1-5 to demonstrate at which level each 3-D locator understands or exhibits these competencies.

  1. Master skill & knowledge
  2. Above average skill and knowledge
  3. Average skill and knowledge
  4. Basic skill or knowledge
  5. Basic training

 

3-D Line Locating (2011) Ltd. Standard Locator Competencies

Standard locating competencies have been broken down into 10 areas for consideration. These are as follows:

  1. Theory of Electromagnetic Locating
  2. Use of transmitter
  3. Use of receiver
  4. Marking procedures
  5. Knowledge of facilities
  6. Visual observations
  7. Safe work practices and regulations
  8. Locate request procedure, documentation and mapping
  9. Federal, provincial and local regulations
  10. Communication Skills

  • Ground Disturbance Level II Supervisor
  • UFL Transmission Advanced Line Locating Course
  • Transmission Advanced Line Locating
  • Petroleum Advanced Line Locating
  • Utility Advanced Line Locating
  • UTV Rider Course
  • Bear and Wildlife Awareness Training
  • EGSO

 

Each HYDROVAC OPERATOR maintains the following certifications when working at 3-D:

3-D Line Locating Ltd. Minimum Requirements:

  • H₂S Alive
  • First Aid
  • Ground Disturbance Level 2
  • Confined Space
  • Fall Arrest
  • PCST
  • CST
  • Class 3 Drivers Licence
  • Log Book Training

3-D Line Locating Ltd. In-House Training for the following:

  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Heat Stress/Extreme Temperatures
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Hazard Recognition and Control
  • 3-D Safety Training Orientation
  • Client- Specific Orientations
  • 3-D Line Locating Ltd. – Quality & Procedural Manual

Hydrovac Operators also must demonstrate Safe Driving, and will take an in house drivers test so we can assess knowledge and skill.  Hydrovac Workers must also understand Commercial Vehicle Safety Compliance by taking Log Book Training.
